listening

Wow, I have been thinking and thinking about blogging and all the moments I want to blog about, but it is only now that I am actually doing it.

It is not even that I could say that life is super busy. Life actually got a little less busy, since I canceled two students I had and moved all my other students to one day a week. But I guess I actually started to just relax a little and enjoy some more time with my children at home.

Taking this time seemed to coincide perfectly with Sophia going through some intense phase. She is INTENSE! One evening it was one of those intense times again, and she was crying and really angry. I was out of steam and just asked her "What do you want?" This is really a tricky question to ask a child, since they don't usually know at all what they want, even if they might tell you they know. However, asking her she began talking about how she wants to convert her room into a gym class. She had a complete plan in mind, with where the monkey bars go, how we should make the floor soft, and that we would paint a sun on one wall, and that her bed would have to move into our bedroom. She kept talking and talking. I kept listening and listening.

Listening to a child is also tricky, because of course we can't convert her bedroom into a gym room, but I also heard that she needs to move her body more. So, I said just that at the end. "It sounds like you need to move your body more. " From the expression on her face and her reaction I could tell she felt completely understood.

After this situation I had to think back to my last entry. How important it is not lecture but instead to just be there for the child.
