felted rocks

In our classroom we have "rocks in the basket". You can read this article by the Barbara Rabin, my mentor teacher and founder of this idea, to find out how it is done and what it is about.

I wanted to do a felting project with the children before the year ends. We felted around the rocks. I explained my idea to the children that everyone was going to take a rock home, felted, so the good energy would always be there. We are taking home good energy, creativity, curiosity, kindness and many other wonderful moments and qualities.

The children felt this was a special project. They were completely engaged in the activity and felt proud of all their work, not just the felting, but I think they knew this project celebrated all the work they had accomplished.

Barbara loved the idea so much she wants to make it a yearly tradition. Over the years the children would accumulate many rocks, resembling the best in each of us and school.
